What Are Dental Onlays?
An onlay is a form of indirect restoration performed on a decayed, fractured or otherwise damaged tooth. They are just like dental inlays, with the difference that inlays cover solely the pits and fissures in between the cusps, or tips, of the tooth, whereas onlays restore beyond the chewing surface and cover one or more of the affected or eroded cusps. Gold had been used as the traditional material for inlays and onlays in the past, but thanks to modern advancements, ceramic onlays have become the preferred alternative due to their strength and similarity to the natural tooth color.
Some great advantages to obtaining ceramic onlays are:
Close resemblance to natural color - The dental onlay matches the color of the surrounding teeth, causing for a seamless and unnoticeable repair.
Durable material - The strong ceramic material provides high wear and corrosion resistance, minimal thermal conductivity, and greater biocompatibility compared to metal alternatives.
Withstanding color appearance - Because they are so easy to clean, the onlays are able to sustain their natural-resembling color even past 30 years of having them, making this a cost-efficient procedure.
Overall tooth support - The high-strength material used for this treatment helps support and strengthen the tooth, in addition to having a much less risk of plaque accumulation.
Ceramic Onlay Process
Typically, the procedure for a dental onlay requires two separate visits. Your initial visit begins with the removal of any tooth decay, weakened areas, or damaged fillings, generally under local anesthesia. Once the site for the onlay has been thoroughly cleaned out, a mold impression of your bite is taken to help create your custom ceramic onlay. While this impression is sent out to a specialized laboratory for fabrication, you will be given a temporary onlay to cover the area until your permanent onlays are ready for your next appointment.
During your second appointment, your temporary covering is removed and the ceramic onlay is tried on to verify that it’s an exact fit. Your dentist will also assess for any occlusion problems that might complicate the placement of the onlay. Once everything seems to work out perfectly, your ceramic onlay will finally be bonded or cemented onto the site, and your smile and oral functionality can return to normal.
